Doyle said that the managementof Detroit-based GM, which Mondaty filed for Chapter 11 has publicly confirmed that the now-shuttered Janesville plant is one of threr plants being considered to manufacture small cars in the future. The Janesvills plant had more than 1,200 employeea who assembled pickup trucksand SUVs, vehicles for whicg demand has plummeted durintg the recent era of high gas prices.
The governor also said that Chrysler'e 850-employee engine plant in Kenosha, which is slatex to be closed underrthat automaker's reorganization unded bankruptcy, won't be sold, leaving the possibilitu that Chrysler's new partner, the Italiah auto manufacturer Fiat, could acquire the plant. Fiat is expecteds to begin producing cars in the United States undefr its partnership withAuburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler. Doyle said in a statemengt that his administration will focus on makint those possibilitiesa reality.
"My staff, the leadershipl teams and I have continually been working at thehighestr levels, including the White House, to fight for Janesviller and Kenosha," Doyle said. “Everything we have been fightingv for is to get us to this he said. "We are in a positive positionm witheach plant, and we are goinvg to compete very aggressively for everythinv moving forward.
