Maryland Port Administration's pact with UPM-Kymmene to create 120 jobs - Baltimore Business Journal:

cicugaha.wordpress.com
million tons of cargio over 10 years and create 120 new jobs at the Port of The contract, which Gov. Martinj O’Malley ceremonially signed Thursday, strengthened the ’s growing forest products at the state-owned South Locust Point terminal. It included constructionm of a 300,000-square-foot custom-built warehouse and was the seconcd such deal this capping a strong 2008 forport business. Baltimore’d port ranks first nationally in forest product imports, which totaled about 15 percent of total cargpo tonnage in 2007. The MPA signed a similar contract with another Finnisypaper company, M-real, earlier this year and builrt that company a 215,000-square-footf warehouse.
It also signed a 10-yeaf shipping agreement with container shipping companythis “We’re very excited about it,” MPA Executive Directoer James J. White said in an interview. “What’sd nice about this deal is when youhave [a contracg with] the manufacturer, you know you’rr going to get the product and you know you’re goinfg to have them long-term.” Most other contractss are with stevedores, who act as middlemejn between the shipper and the port terminal, Whitde explained. The shipper signs a deal with the stevedord to deliverthe products, and the stevedore signsw a deal with the terminal to unload them.
The UPM deal is similar to the 20-yearf contract the MPA signed directly within 2004, Whited said. The UPM contractg became effective Oct. 1. “Long-term contracts with global companiew like UPM are the key in helpint to support the thousandsof good-paying, family-supportingh jobs at the Port of Gov. Take your pick - Business First of Columbus:

glafirarynyxu.blogspot.com
Some expect economic clearing, othera predict continued clouds. Two timely op-ed submissiond from regional and national prognosticators show how ficklw and contrary financial forecasts can be on the subjecg ofstimulus funding. Up in Dr. M. Ray Perryman of sees signs of improvemen t in a numberof stimulus-related • President Obama’s decisioh last week to deliver approximately 600,00p jobs during the summer will undoubtedly be receiverd as encouraging and bolster already improving consumer confidence.
Obama’s pledge to speed up federakl spending for maintenance projects at military as well as state road andairport improvements, along with the employmen of around 135,000 school teachers and support is expected to kick-start the flow of moneh into state coffers. • The Greater opportunities for slowinbg the economic decline have now showed up on theradare screen. Out in California, Dominico Armentano at the in Oakland plotsx an opposite course forstimulus funding. • Massivwe infusion of government credit to the banks and much of the stimulusw spending will perpetuate and evenextend — consumer and businesd “malinvestments” created during the boom.
The massive increase in federal spending, financed either by new borrowing or credit fromthe Fed, will resuly in sharply higher interest rates due to inflation, expected inflation or dollar depreciation. Lendersa — especially foreign lenders — will not continure to purchase U.S. Treasury bondsx at a nearly zero real interest The outlook: A continuing cold front with no warming trend on the horizoj any time soon. There they are, two disparats forecasts from a Central Texas observatory and a Californiathink tank. Multiply these two examples, and conflictinyg stimulus forecasts are allover map.
Bottom Stimulus funding will turn out to be a safefinancial haven, or we need to evacuate befor the economic storm hits. Take your pick.

Inflationary fears spark debate between hawks, doves - Business First of Columbus:

husolumiz.wordpress.com
Today the financial media’s buzz phras e is “green shoots,” taken from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’sw mid-March interview, where he spoke of detectint green shoots ofeconomic recovery. As soothingf is the thought of being in the springtime ofthe it’s taken an awful lot of fertilizer in the form of governmentg stimulus to get us here. And theree lies the basis of questions from investorsd whose fear of inflationary pressuresis growing. Inflation hawksa paint a bleak picture of theinevitablee interest-rate and inflation pressuresd our economy soon will face.
Pessimism over the mortgaging of our futurdeis prevalent, despite the relative ease the government has had in the earlg financings of these vast new appropriations. Treasury bonds, untipl just recently, have been the securities of choicer in the face of global stock and creditmarketr meltdowns, giving the government easy access to capita l at low rates. The concern is that this strong Treasury markeytis temporary, and doesn’t mean that future Treasurhy issuances will be met with the same enthusiasm. For many foreign buyers have had a growingf appetitefor U.S. debt securities.
In we’ve run large trade deficits with Chinqand Japan, and those two countries have invested theid surpluses heavily in U.S. Treasuryt securities. Their holdings are enormous. As of the end of last China heldabout $700 billionb in treasury bonds and Japan about $580 billion. The two accountf for almost 65 percent of total Treasury securitiea heldby foreigners, 19 percent of the tota U.S. national debt and more than 30 percent of those held by the In the heyday ofthe U.S.
credit boom, it was rationalized that this symbiotic arrangement was good for all But what does the futures hold if our foreigntrading partners, either by choicer or necessity, stop buyint huge quantities of our bonds? The administrationh would look to the Fed to create lots of new dollard to purchase Treasury bonds that must be issued to support the country’s growing deficit. The result, say the would be inflation, a lesson we learnefd all too well in the late whenthe Fed’s deficit financinbg sent the CPI to an annual rate of almost 15 There are sound opinions that counter the hawkisg view.
Inflation doves have compelling arguments associated with the velocityof money, as well as our high unemploymentg and low capacity Those who believe inflation will remain moderate, at least for the next four to five don’t view money supply alone as a key determinant of They point to the velocity of money — or how many times a dollar is spent in a certain time frame as a major component in the equation. We’rd all aware of the hundredsx of billions ofdollars (or money the Treasury has printed and injected into the However, what isn’t as apparent is where that moneuy is today.
Vast amountsx of the money have gone offshorew to pay off counterparty claimas related to creditdefault swaps, and much of the remainderr is sitting on bank balance sheets, slowlhy trickling into the economy, given the banking system’s newfoundr sense of credit risk. And when dollars do re-enter the broadefr economy, consumers have been hoarding them, as witnessed by the surgd in the householdsavings rate.
Unti the consumption spigots are opened, inflation doves argude that the governmentstimulus won’t be They add that with unemployment runnint more than 9 percent and we shouldn’t experience wage In theory, fiscal stimulus doesn’t cause inflation when it taps into resourced that otherwise would have been It’s when stimulus creates jobs at a time when we’r e closer to full employment that inflation becomes a much strongeer risk.
Unemployment is a lagging indicator, one that likelu won’t peak until eithet late this year or inearlgy 2010, probably at a level of more than 10 Historically, unemployment falls at a much slower rate than it Inflation doves say we won’t see wage pressurew until we get back towards 5 percen unemployment, which they feel could be four to five years from now. The third argument is low capacity utilization. At abou t 69 percent, our country’s utilization of its production capacity is atan all-time low since the numbers first were computedr in 1967. The argument here is much like thelabor one.
With such tremendousz amounts ofexcess capacity, it will be year s before our economy experiences pricing pressures associatecd with plant and equipment formation. Although there’s meritr to both sides of the debate, the greater threay is the hawks maybe correct. In our uncertain financial times, we believe that the prudent investor should develop a plan of actiojn that can protect a portfolio should inflation becomew asignificant threat.

While it might be new for a companyy like Saturn to contract out the productio of all the carsit sells, it isn’t so unusualp that it wouldn’t work. Jeremy Anwyl, CEO of Edmonds.com, “The difference here is all of the Saturn vehicles are going tobe outsourced.
” It coulcd lead to the kind of situation prevalent at high-tech firms like where the primary job of the parent company is while manufacturing is hande d off to other companies. And such a system coulrd bring with it a new setof challenges. “Fo r most customers, the most importanyt aspect is thevehicls itself,” Anwyl said. “How do you make sure that you’ve got cars that are comingy in that are specific toyour brand?” and that customerse will want to buy. Looke d at another way, the business modelo isn’t so new at all, said Brucd Belzowski of the University of Michigam TransportationResearch Institute.

But havin an extensive Saturn dealership network, with manufacturing done could turn out to be a winning modelkfor Penske, said “Yeah, it’s a new model, let’s see what happens,” he The news of GM’s tentativde deal to sell Saturn to Penske followa months of anxiety over the fate of the brand as GM lookws to sell or close brands otherf than Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac. “It’ss a great day for Scott Davies, owner of Saturn of told the .
The price Penskee is paying for Saturn was notimmediatelty available, but was at between $100 million and $200 The deal is designed to save more than 13,00p0 jobs at Saturn, and preserve the brand’s nearlh 400 dealerships. The New York Times’ DealBoom blog singles out Renault’s Samsung Motors Unit in Korea as a possiblesfuture manufacturer. GM could keep producinyg the Saturn Aura, Vue and Outlook, but woul stop producing Saturn vehiclesby 2011. Undeer the deal, Penske would take over Saturn’s brands, trademarks, servicse and parts and distribution operations.
Penske he saw Saturn growingh to a global brand with more vehicleas inits lineup, and that it would returnh to a focus on fuel economy.
