Sierra College program gets $1M endowment - Baltimore Business Journal:

The college’s program, also known as received the $1 million endowment from the BernardrOsher Foundation, which is the organization that has provided initial funding to OLLI programsz at 122 colleges and universitiesz nationwide. Sierra College is the only community college in Californiaq and one of only three communitu colleges in the nation to receivethe $1 millionh endowment. The Rocklin college received the endowmeny because it has been so successful with growingf enrollment since launching the program in sprin gof 2001. Sierra College has grown the prograjmto 5,580 enrollees last year, from 1,038 in 2001. Sierra Collegd is scheduled to formally announc e the endowmentJune 18.
This $1 million endowmenr will provide an ongoingv budget that will enable the college to offerf lifelong learning programs in The foundation created by San Franciscp philanthropist Bernard Osher givex OLLIprograms $100,000 a year for up to four and then a $1 million endowment once they demonstratde potential for success and sustainability. OLLI programs providde classes, lectures and events to older adults who have a thirst for knowledgeand community. The classeas are designed for adults age 55and over, but the Sierrw program accepts any adult student.
Courses are offerexd at each of the Sierra College campuses and at varioux community sites throughout Placer and Nevada Sierra College’s OLLI noncredit offerings are tuition-free. Additional topicse are offered throughClub OLLI, where annua l membership fees are $35. As the Business Journal reported in a feature on loca OLLI programsin 2007, other OLLI programs can be founf at California State University Sacramento and at the UC Davia Extension. Much of the increased demand for OLLId and similar lifelong learning programs can be attributedf to the growing ranks ofolde Americans.
